Ujjain

Ujjain is known for its great cultural and spiritual importance like Varanasi or Benaras. Ujjain, the erstwhile state capital of Malwa region is now also one of the major cities of Madhya Pradesh. Situated 190km west of state capital Bhopal. Ujjain is also known for its Simhastha Kumbha Parva (Kumbh Mela). Ujjain is a city of famous king Vikramaditya and his loyal Kalidas. Kalidas is known for his poetry skills even today

Ujjain is also a popular tourist destination today. Although the permanent population of Ujjain is low, it receives a large number of tourists. During peak days, on an average 10000 tourists visit the place. Apart from this, on the occasion of religious fairs held on Nagpanchmi and Mahashivratri nearly 5 to 10 lakhs pilgrims come to Ujjain.

Known as the temple city for its numerous temples from different eras, and the major attraction is Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga. It is one of the 12 jyotirlingas, where Bhasma Aarti is a daily ritual that you must attend. In order to attend the aarti, make sure to follow the dress code if you wish to go inside the sanctum and participate in Abhishek. Some more temples to visit in Ujjain are Harsiddhi temple, Gopal temple, Chintaman Ganesh temple, Chardham temple, Mangalnath temple, Bada Ganpati temple, Navagraha temple and Kal Bhairav temple. At Kal Bhairav temple, the devotees offer liquor to the deity as Prashad.The world's largest religious gathering, Simhastha (Kumbh Mela), is held on the banks of the Shipra river once every 12 years which is the maximum visited place in Ujjain.

Adding to Ujjain's tourist places is The Shri Ram Ghat, also known as Ram ghat, the most ancient bathing ghat. Also, Sandipani Ashram is a must visit place in Ujjain. Lord Krishna did his schooling from this place.
